For years, the Assamese film industry—fondly known as Jollywood—searched for a formula to bring audiences back to the theaters. As of early 2026, it seems that search is over. From poignant biopics to high-octane actioners and emotional swan songs, Assamese cinema is currently witnessing its most profitable and artistically vibrant era since the golden days of the 1980s.
The Phenomenon of Roi Roi Binale
The undisputed headline of the past year has been the monumental success of “Roi Roi Binale”. Released in late 2025, the film serves as the final acting role and “dream project” of the legendary Zubeen Garg, who passed away just before its completion.
Directed by Rajesh Bhuyan, this musical romantic drama didn’t just touch hearts; it shattered the ceiling of Assamese box office potential. Collecting over ₹42 crore worldwide, it has become the highest-grossing Assamese film of all time, more than doubling the records of previous blockbusters like Bidurbhai. The film has sparked a cultural movement, with theaters reportedly keeping one seat vacant during screenings as a tribute to the icon.
Biopics and Big Budgets: Bhaimon Da
Another landmark release is “Bhaimon Da”, a commercial biopic on the life of legendary filmmaker Munin Barua. Directed by Sasanka Samir, the film is one of the most ambitious productions in the industry’s history, shot across 120 locations with a cast of over 300 performers.
It earned approximately ₹14 crore, proving that the Assamese audience has a deep appetite for “cinema about cinema.” By blending nostalgia with modern production values, Bhaimon Da successfully connected the legacy of 90 years of Assamese film history with the younger generation.
Box Office Leaderboard (2025–2026)
The recent surge has shifted the “All-Time High” charts significantly:

Critical Acclaim: Adi Shakti Sweeps Honours

While commercial hits are filling the coffers, artistic depth is winning trophies. Most recently, in February 2026, the film “Adi Shakti” made waves at the Global Cine Confluence in Delhi.

Directed by Bitupan Kashyap, the film won Best Feature Film and Best Original Story. Centered on a young woman challenging male dominance and age-old societal norms, Adi Shakti represents the industry’s growing prowess in socially relevant, high-concept storytelling that resonates beyond state borders.

Looking Ahead: Releases in 2026

The momentum shows no sign of slowing down. Several big-ticket projects are currently the talk of the town:

  • Agnibaan: Starring Jatin Bora and Preety Kongana, this thriller released in early February 2026 and has already generated significant buzz for its high production design.
  • Herowa Chanda: A drama featuring Amrita Gogoi and Joy Kashyap, released in January 2026, aimed at the “family-feel” segment.
  • Diphlu: A much-anticipated project starring Amrita Gogoi, slated for an August 2026 release.
  • Joubone Amoni Kore 2: A sequel to the beloved classic, continuing the trend of reviving successful franchises.
    A New Dawn
The success of 2025 and 2026 has proven that Assamese cinema is no longer just a “regional” interest but a growing market. The government’s decision to return the GST share of Roi Roi Binale to the Zubeen Garg Foundation—and the general tax-free status of several hits—has further incentivized producers to dream bigger.
As the curtains rise on more screens across the state, the message is clear: Jollywood has found its voice, its rhythm, and most importantly, its audience.
