MAJULI: In a significant move toward sustainable tourism and carbon-neutral travel, the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) has officially rolled out its dedicated fleet of electric mini-buses for the Majuli Heritage Circuit today.
As the world’s largest river island moves closer to attaining UNESCO World Heritage status, this “Green Corridor” initiative marks a departure from diesel-heavy transit, ensuring that the serene atmosphere of our Sattras remains untainted by urban pollution.
Silent Engines, Sacred Spaces
The new fleet consists of 25 specially designed 9-meter electric buses, customized for the narrow, winding roads of the island.
Zero-Emission Travel: These buses run on high-capacity lithium-ion batteries, offering a range of 180 km on a single charge—more than enough to cover the island’s primary Sattra circuit twice over.
Heritage Integration: Unlike standard city buses, these vehicles feature “Heritage Wraps” depicting traditional mask-making (Mukha Shilpa) and Sattriya dance forms, acting as mobile billboards for the island’s culture.
Smart Commute: Equipped with GPS-tracking and the ‘ASTC-Connect’ app integration, tourists can now track the real-time location of the “Green Shuttle” from their phones.
Beyond Majuli: The Temple Circuit
While Majuli is the flagship, the rollout today also covers the Guwahati-Hajo-Sualkuchi heritage loop. This ensures that pilgrims and textile enthusiasts traveling to the “Manchester of the East” (Sualkuchi) can now do so in air-conditioned, eco-friendly comfort.
The Muse’s Perspective: At Assam Muse, we believe that progress shouldn’t come at the cost of the environment. Majuli is a fragile ecosystem, constantly battling the elements. Introducing electric mobility is not just a “tech upgrade”; it is an act of preservation. By silencing the engine, we are allowing the natural sounds of the Brahmaputra and the spiritual chants of the Namghars to take center stage once again.
