GUWAHATI: A new name has been added to the biodiversity list of Assam—the Diamond Dove. Originally native to Australia, this tiny and beautiful bird species was recently spotted for the first time in the skies of Assam. While researchers and birdwatchers have captured this rare sight, the reasons behind its appearance have left environmentalists concerned.

Key Highlights:

• First Sighting: While the species has previously been spotted in places like Delhi or Punjab in India, this is the first recorded sighting in Assam.

• Escape or Abandonment? According to scientists, these birds have not flown here naturally. It is highly likely that they escaped from cages due to the illegal exotic pet trade or were intentionally released into the environment.

• Ecosystem Crisis: The arrival of invasive or non-native species can impact the food sources and habitats of our indigenous birds. Furthermore, the possibility of spreading new diseases cannot be ruled out.

Researcher Bijoy Basfore remarked on the situation, stating that while it is a joy to see these beautiful birds, it is time for our forest department to keep a strict vigil on invasive species, similar to the vigilance seen in ‘Operation Kurma’.
