KAZIRANGA: While the world knows Kaziranga for its iconic one-horned rhinoceros, a new “blooming” attraction is set to change the way tourists experience Assam’s pride. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma yesterday inaugurated the Kaziranga Orchid Park at Kohora, a 6.6-acre sanctuary dedicated to the breathtaking floral diversity of the Northeast.
The inauguration was marked by a special milestone: the unveiling of ‘Seujia Kaziranga’ (Green Kaziranga), a unique hybrid orchid developed after eight years of cross-breeding by renowned expert Mohan Pradhan.
A Biodiversity Stronghold
Spread across 20 bighas, the park is not just a garden but a conservation hub:
• 1,600+ Varieties: The park houses over 900 indigenous species and hundreds of exotic varieties.
• State-of-the-Art Glass Houses: Seven specialized glass houses ensure that these delicate blooms thrive in their micro-climates year-round.
• Cultural Integration: Beyond flowers, the park features a 500-seat amphitheater for folk performances and a traditional cuisine restaurant to give visitors a holistic Assamese experience.
The “Three-Day” Strategy
During the inauguration, the Chief Minister noted that Kaziranga currently sees over 1 lakh tourists per season, but most stay for only a day.
“Our goal is to give tourists a reason to spend at least three days in Kaziranga. This Orchid Park, along with the upcoming AI-based Interpretation Centre and the elevated corridor, will transform Kaziranga into a multi-day destination,” the CM stated.
