GUWAHATI: The “Assam Sonmilito Morcha” (ASOM) suffered a crippling blow yesterday as three suspended Congress MLAs—Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, Sashikanta Das, and Basanta Das—officially donned the saffron scarf at the BJP headquarters.
The timing is critical, as it coincides with the filing of nominations for three Rajya Sabha seats. The defection has triggered a bitter war of words:
- The Accusation: APCC Chief Gaurav Gogoi has launched a scathing attack on CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing the BJP of “ideological bankruptcy” for allegedly seeking secret support from the AIUDF to ensure the victory of NDA’s Rajya Sabha candidate, Pramod Boro.
- The Defense: The BJP has dismissed these claims, stating that leaders are leaving the Congress because it has become a “rudderless ship” without a vision for Assam’s 2026 future.
