GUWAHATI: The political silence following the Dol Jatra festivities was shattered today as the Indian National Congress (INC) stole a march on its rivals. In a high-stakes move, the party released its first list of 42 candidates for the upcoming 126-member Assam Assembly Elections, signaling that the opposition is battle-ready even before the Election Commission of India (ECI) announces the formal dates.

The centerpiece of the announcement is state party chief Gaurav Gogoi, who will contest from the high-profile Jorhat seat. This move is seen as a direct challenge to the BJP’s stronghold in Upper Assam and sets the stage for what many are calling the “Battle of the Titans.”

Key Candidates and Strategies

• Gaurav Gogoi (Jorhat): By fielding their strongest face in Jorhat, the Congress hopes to capitalize on the “Gogoi legacy” and tap into the local sentiment in the tea-heartland.

• Debabrata Saikia (Nazira): The Leader of the Opposition retains his traditional bastion, aiming to consolidate the party’s core base.

• New Faces & Reserved Seats: The list features a mix of veteran experience and young blood, with strategic placements in reserved constituencies like Boko-Chaygaon (ST) and Barpeta (SC).

The Collapse of the “Morcha”?

While the early list shows confidence, it has also sent ripples through the Asom Sonmilito Morcha (ASOM). Several smaller allies within the opposition bloc are reportedly disgruntled by the Congress’s unilateral move, leading to whispers that the “United Opposition” might be facing its first major internal fracture.

The Government’s Response: “Job Over Politics”

In a counter-move to the opposition’s election fervor, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma focused on governance today. At a ceremonial event at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, the CM distributed appointment letters to 289 new recruits, taking the state’s total recruitment tally to a record 1,58,669.

“While others are busy naming candidates, we are busy naming the future of Assam’s youth,” the CM remarked during the ceremony.
